A Supreme Court ruling which came into effect on the 17th July 2015, further exacerbated Zimbabwe’s ongoing problems. The ruling allowed for employers to terminate employee contracts on three months’ notice without providing any form of retrenchment pay.

At the time many labour experts believed that the ruling favoured employers as it lowered retrenchment costs and left employees at the mercy of employers - in hindsight, these labour experts were spot on.
